In 2023, Chicago Sunday Evening Club has decided to award the Golden Rose to recognize women who serve as a great example in living, promoting, and implementing personal faith for the good of the city.
We can’t imagine a more deserving of this inaugural rose than Sister Jean Delores Schmidt, who has been part of the Mundelein College and, now, Loyola University community for 62+ years!
The Catholic Church first began presenting the Golden Rose in 1096, and have continues the practice intermittently, when they found an appropriate person or order to honor. They have gone as many as 70 years in-between recipients; if a worthy successor to Sister Jean can be found, we won’t wait that long. We hope to present the Golden Rose annually around Laetare (the fourth weekend of Lent), in what is also known as Rose Sunday.
